Hong Kong Junk Boat Food Guide -Buffets and Beyond

Sticky Summer is coming to a close…. Still Junk Time!

We’ve just come into the best time of year in Hong Kong, when the days are 25-30 degrees C, sunny and humidity has dropped out of the sauna summer zone. Most junk companies operate all year round, and Autumn may just be the best time to charter a junk boat , get some food and drink and spend a day at sea.  Here’s some tips for making sure your junk is a success:

Booking

Most importantly, book your junk well in advance as they can book up for popular weekends. Also, put the word out to your guests early so they are more likely to be free.
You can hire a day junk or night junk. Day junks are normally longer and you can do more ( islands, water activities etc.) while night junks are obviously more food and/or drink orientated and more of a party than a day-trip vibe.

If you book for the Saturday, you have the Sunday to recover afterwards! Or the Saturday night to continue the party…

 Choices, choices

Junk boats are massive in Hong Kong, and so are the choices available to you. You can basically choose anything from renting a boat and organising food, drink and anything else yourself to paying someone to provide a complete package for you so you only need to turn up. These cover a range of prices so there’s bound to be an option to suit.

If you go for the bring-your-own option, remember to plan well ahead and get stocked up in advance- once you’re on the boat there’s no turning back.

Where from/ Where to?
Most junks depart from Central, Causeway Bay (Noon Day Gun), Aberdeen or Sai Kung. You can agree/ request in advance if you have a particular preference or just leave it  up to the captain, but some popular ones  are Lamma, Sai Kung, Deep Water Bay, Clearwater Bay, South Bay or Turtle Cove.

What to take
Food and drink! Swimwear, towel, SUNCREEN (and remember to reapply throughout the day), change of clothes, flip-flops, sunnies, sea sickness tablets if this affects you, blow-up things?, more food and drink.
